Have you noticed how searching for something in the ballpark of “cyan color print test” brings up results that look wildly different from each other?
We noticed that too. So, to find out why, we contacted several vendors who offer cyan, magenta, yellow, and black testing sheets for printing. Below is part of a reply from colortest.page that felt very much on point, so I’m sharing it here:
“Hello Mandy,
Thank you for your letter. It really can seem puzzling to see so much variation in color in your search results. The truth is that most sites offering these “testing sheets” don’t really care what they’re sharing (they just need to capture your attention so they can rub some ads in your face).
The pure CMYK color (one color per sheet) pages that we offer for download are specifically tuned to invoke single-color usage for the task. Which means that purging cyan will only use cyan ink; magenta will be filled with magenta ink only; and yellow and black do the same for yellow or black ink. That is the sole purpose: purging a single color without using the others in excess.
The testing sheets we have on colortest.page are accurate and tested—created by design professionals with a deep understanding of industrial color printing.“
So what you actually need for purging isn’t a “mixture of colors” to represent a shade—it’s a file that instructs your printer to use only one ink.
For this purpose, a very specific single-color sheet needs to be sent as a print job. That’s what ensures the most adequate results.
Keep in mind: this procedure only works if your printer doesn’t have more complex underlying issues. It works in most cases, but it may be more or less successful depending on the model, brand, age, and wear of your unit.
Even if it doesn’t bring the desired result, it’s still a useful diagnostic step—something you can mention later when discussing the probable cause with a printer technician.
Most importantly, this procedure is super simple, requires next to zero technical knowledge, and is very safe to try before wasting any more time and effort chasing down a printing issue.
